Online Violin Lessons

If you would like to take lessons remotely, I can offer Zoom lessons.

Online violin lessons have some benefits of their own. You can take lessons from the comfort of your own room and save on travelling time. And you can access a recording of the lesson for the whole week on Zoom Cloud. Recording is made upon request before each lesson starts.

After each lesson, I will email you the lesson notes with assignments for the next lesson. You will also have full access to my teaching portal engined by My Music Staff and all its functionalities such as lesson calendar (can be synched to other calendars), history of lesson notes, practice log, invoices and payment facility.

Students have an opportunity to take part in Zoom concerts run approximately once a month. These are private events open to students and invited family guests only. As such, these Zoom concerts offer a relaxed performance platform to showcase your music.

If you would like to work towards an exam, I am a registered MTB (Music Teachers’ Board) Centre and can conduct exams remotely via Zoom, and I can also help you to prepare for ABRSM Performance Grades and Trinity Digital Exams.

While playing together is not easy over Zoom due to the latency, there are various ways to obtain backing tracks to help you perform your solo piece in Zoom concerts or exams. I can record a backing track for you or help you to purchase one.

What you will need to for your Zoom lesson?

Zoom installed on your device. I strongly recommend a computer as Zoom provides more settings on computer app. If you don’t have access to a computer, a tablet or phone would also work.

Broadband connection. If using a computer and it is possible, plug your computer with an ethernet cable to your router.

An external microphone (optional). To get your whole of the upper body on the screen and sometimes the feet, you will need to step away from the device, and sometimes this makes it difficult for the device’s internal microphone to catch your violin’s sound and voice. A plug-in external microphone with a lead cable can get closer to you would be useful for this reason.

A Bluetooth speaker (optional). This would be helpful when you’d like to perform your piece with a backing track.

What if the internet connection is bad?

As long as we have got the technical stuff set up, bad connection is often out of hands.

If we know in advance this is going to cause an issue, then we can reschedule, refund, or carry credit for the next lesson.

If the connection is lost during lesson, then we can follow it up with a video & feedback, whereby the student sends me a video clip of the playing and I will send a written feedback. Alternatively, we can switch to another app such as FaceTime, but this should not be a regular occurrence.
